Charminar

The Soul of the City

Built in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah to commemorate the end of a deadly plague, Charminar is the defining symbol of Hyderabad. Its four minarets soar 56 metres into the sky, and its arched corridors once housed a mosque that still holds Friday prayers. Surrounding it is the labyrinthine Laad Bazaar — a world of bangles, pearls, and perfumes that has barely changed in four centuries.

Golconda Fort

Echoes of the Nizams

Once the seat of the Qutb Shahi dynasty and the source of the legendary Koh-i-Noor diamond, Golconda Fort is a masterpiece of medieval military architecture. Spread across a 120-metre granite hill, its eight gates, 87 bastions, and ingenious acoustic system — where a hand-clap at the entrance can be heard at the top — make it one of India's most extraordinary fortresses.

Hussain Sagar Lake

The Heart of Hyderabad

Commissioned by Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah in 1562, Hussain Sagar is one of the largest artificial lakes in Asia. At its heart stands a monolithic Buddha statue — 18 metres of white granite, weighing 350 tonnes — accessible by boat from Lumbini Park and NTR Gardens. The lake's promenade, Tank Bund, is lined with statues of Telangana's luminaries and is the city's favourite evening walk.
